<image:title>Former US President Jimmy Carter his wife Rosalynn Carter and a delegation tour Mosebo a village in Ethiopia where The Carter Center has worked in an effort to eradicate Trachoma. The Carter Center’s goal was to have 10,000 latrines built in rural villages in order to reduce the number of flies the program became so popular that over 90,000 latrines were constructed. Trachoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. It is caused by infection with Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, making it both treatable and preventable. The advanced stage of trachoma trichiasis, the inward turning of eyelashes that leads to corneal abrasion and eventual blindness causes extraordinary pain and discomfort to the sufferer. Women are approximately three times more likely to have trichiasis than men. Surgery is used to reverse the in turned eyelashes of patients with trichiasis. Mosebo Ethiopia September 15, 2005. <image:title>Angola is emerging from one of the continent's longest-running civil wars and is currently Africa's fastest-growing economy, driven by oil production. In recent years, Angola has become an important supplier of oil to the United States and is presently the largest supplier of crude oil to China. However, the government has an abject record on transparency, corruption and human rights. A recent Human Rights Watch report said four billion dollars of oil revenue vanished between 1987 and 2002 and The World Bank estimates 70% of Angolans live on less than two dollars a day. Most live in dire poverty and lack access to basic health care. One in four children do not make it to their fifth birthday and many observers stress the Angola government should be spending more on health, education and reduction of poverty. It was at Montpelier that James Madison first imagined the Constitution, spending time researching governments and organizing his thoughts into what he believed were the ideal principles for a representative democracy. Madison’s ideas would become the “Virginia Plan,” and later the framework for the Constitution. Archaeology serves a critical role in restoring Montpelier and learning about how the plantation was run. Erica D’Elia is the archeology manager at Montpelier February 27, 2012. <image:title>The ancient Swahili Island of Lamu tucked away at the northern end of Kenya’s coastline is one of the oldest surviving towns in East Africa. Its narrow streets, its stone buildings with beautifully carved doors, its busy waterfront teaming with dhows make it one of the most interesting tourist destinations in Africa. There is no motor traffic in fact there are only a few vehicles, which are operated by government authorities so transportation is by donkey and dhow. Lamu dates back to at least the 14th century but grew when Arab settlers established a busy trading post at the start of the 16th century, exporting ivory, mangrove poles, tortoiseshell and slaves. Most of the fine Swahili houses were built in the 19th century. In 2001 Lamu was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. <image:caption>The ancient Swahili Island of Lamu tucked away at the northern end of Kenya’s coastline is one of the oldest surviving towns in East Africa. Its narrow streets, its stone buildings with beautifully carved doors, its busy waterfront teaming with dhows make it one of the most interesting tourist destinations in Africa. For the Bagisu, the dominant tribe in Eastern Uganda, circumcision is required for a young man to progress to adulthood. The boys are circumcised without anesthesia, if they move or cry out during the cutting they are viewed as a coward and shame their parents and ancestors and will never be viewed as an adult. Recent studies indicate that male circumcision can reduce HIV transmission by as much as 60 percent.</image:title>

<image:caption>Mountains of rubbish are a common sight in Luanda. There is no organized waste collection for people to dispose of garbage. Without regular garbage collection waste is dumped in unofficial sites very close to or right inside densely populated areas. These rotting heaps become quagmires during the rainy season and are all too often the only playgrounds for children. Since February 2006, the Angolan capital of Luanda has been experiencing its worst ever cholera epidemic. Over 40,000 people have become sick and approximately 1,500 have died due to the epidemic. Malawi recently passed a law banning child marriage, raising the minimum age to 18 in the southern African country where half of girls end up as child brides. Women rights campaigners hailed the move as "a great day for Malawian girls" and said the law would help boost development in one of the world's poorest countries.</image:title>

<image:title>Polio was thought to be on the verge of eradication but recovered in 2004 after officials of three northern Nigerian states stopped vaccinations because of rumors that the vaccine had become contaminated with the AIDS virus, or with pork products or hormones that would render Muslim women infertile. Polio is spread by fecal-oral contact, which makes densely populated areas with poor sanitation like Kano Nigeria at particularly high risk. Northern Nigeria currently has one of the highest number of polio cases in the world. Omar Aminu, 2, is a victim, despite having received the vaccine. Both of Aminu’s parents are also victims of polio. Kano, Nigeria.</image:title>

<image:title>In the village of Kwa-al, located in central Nigeria, 36% of the children tested positive for Schistosomiasis. The Carter Center estimates that 200 million people in 74 different countries are infected with Schistosomiasis. It is a parasite transmitted by snails living in slow moving water and usually affects school age children. The parasite is absorbed through the skin when exposed to contaminated water and can cause poor growth and development, bladder dysfunction and kidney disease. Schistosomiasis can be treated with a single dose of the drug Praziquantel. Here children who had just received a dose of Praziquantel in an effort to control the parasite are again swimming in contaminated water.</image:title>
